Are you experiencing intimate dryness?

Intimate dryness is a common problem. Sea Buckthorn oil can be applied both internally and externally to relieve dryness. Thinning and drying of the mucous membranes, atrophy, is typically associated with a decrease in oestrogen levels during menopause. The decrease in oestrogen levels also causes changes in the bacterial populations found in the vagina and an increase in mucosal pH. As a result of the changes, the mucosa is more prone to damage and inflammation than before. More than 40% of postmenopausal women experience symptoms associated with mucosal thinning, such as vaginal dryness and sensations of itching and burning in the vaginal area. Symptoms also occur in young women, for example, during breast-feeding and birth control pill use. Dryness of the mucous membranes is also caused by some diseases, such as Sjögren’s syndrome, which damages the secretory glands.

Sea buckthorn oil has positive effects on vaginal mucosa

The effects of standardised SBA24 sea buckthorn oil (Membrasin Vitality Pearls*) on vaginal atrophy were studied in a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial. More than 100 women experiencing symptoms of vaginal dryness participated in the trial. The women took sea buckthorn oil or placebo oil orally for three months in the form of capsules. At the beginning and end of the trial, a gynaecologist assessed and scored the subjects’ vaginal mucosal integrity and other health status. Compared to the placebo group, a significantly higher proportion of the subjects in the sea buckthorn oil group had their vaginal mucosal integrity improve during the trial.  In addition, a positive trend was found in the sea buckthorn oil group’s multi-parameter vaginal health index. The beneficial effects on mucous membranes identified are likely due to the combined effect of several components of the standardised sea buckthorn oil.

The effects of topical sea buckthorn oil were studied in a controlled, randomised clinical trial. More than 160 postmenopausal women experiencing symptoms of vaginal dryness participated in the trial. The women were randomly allocated to apply sea buckthorn oil cream (Membrasin Vaginal Vitality Cream**) or a commercial control cream on their vagina and vulva daily for five weeks. In addition, some women were randomly allocated to a control group that did not use any cream.  Compared to the control group, the sea buckthorn oil cream had a significant positive effect on the vaginal health index score, and a significant relieving effect on dryness, irritation and tenderness in the vaginal area and on vaginal pain experienced during physical exercise. Symptoms associated with dryness were also relieved in a smaller pilot group of premenopausal women during the five-week trial period. In addition to sea buckthorn oil, which heals and protects mucous membranes, the active ingredients of the Membrasin cream are moisture-locking hyaluronate and lactic acid, which adjusts the pH of the cream to the pH of a healthy mucosa.

The Membrasin products used in the studies have been developed and manufactured in Finland.  The capsules are meant to have a holistic long-term effect, as part of a healthy diet. The cream is designed to bring quick local relief and support the capsule’s effect. Both products are hormone free and do not contain any ingredients of animal origin.
