Dry skin is a very common problem

Dry skin is a very common skin problem, and many people encounter it at some point during their lives. During the winter especially, dry skin often worsens because of low environmental humidity, which causes the air to draw moisture from the skin.

There are many other causes of dry skin. These range from short-term conditions, such as the skin temporarily lacking moisture, to longer-term medical conditions, such as atopic dermatitis. Dry skin tends to be more frequent during the winter due to cold air and heating, which decrease the natural moisture barrier of the skin. As a result, the skin can feel irritated, rough, uncomfortable, and itchy i.e. inflammatory symptoms of dry skin.

The skin is the largest organ of the body. It consists of three main layers: the epidermis, dermis, and subcutis. One of the key functions of the skin is to protect the body from external threats such as microbes and chemicals. The outermost layer, the epidermis, is a waterproof barrier that keeps the skin healthy and hydrated. When the skin dries, the epidermis (barrier) weakens and moisture begins to evaporate. To prevent evaporation, omega fatty acids are used in skin care because of their ability to bind moisture.

Long-chain fatty acids have many important roles in normal body functions and are building blocks for the skin. Polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acids participate in the formation of the skin structure and act as precursors for arachidonic fatty acid, essential for the skin to function normally. In addition, Omega-3 fatty acids act as precursors for longer-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties. Monounsaturated omega-7 and omega-9 fatty acids also demonstrate anti-inflammatory properties.
